Section 3. Love & Fr iendship Mai lbox of Peace 078 079 Korea Foundation & US Peace Corps KF COVID-19 Survival Box Gratitude Letter Col lection We were surprised and very pleased when the COVID - 19 Survival Box ar- rived on our porch and want to express our sincere appreciation to the Korea Foundation for this thoughtfulness . We really feel taken care of by a country we have grown to love and respect . < omit > Joining the Peace Corps to go to Korea was one of the most important deci- sions of our lives . Over the years we have maintained close ties with Korea and the friends and family we have there . We were married when we served in the Peace Corps from 1966 - 68 . Ed taught at Seoul National University College of Education and Diane taught at the Attached High School of SNU College of Education . We lived with a family from Diane ’ s school . From 1974 - 76 Ed had a Fulbright grant to study in Korea and while living there we adopted a Korean girl who is now over 50 . In his work with the Harvard Yenching Institute Ed went to Korea once a year and we participated in the Korea Foundation Revisit in 2010 . As a family we have visited a number of times to refresh our children ’ s acquaintance with Korea and to introduce Korea to our grandchildren . To this day all three generations of both Korean and American sides of the families remain in close contact and see each other occasionally . We hope to return to Korea many more times . “To this day all three generations of both Korean and American sides of the families remain in close contact” Diane & Edward Baker , K - 1 Diane & Ed Baker Here is a link to the Letter - to - the - editor I wrote to my local newspaper , “ South Korea Gives Back ”. I also commented on the New York Times article , “ She Helped South Korea in Its Time of Need . In the Pandemic , It Repaid Her ” My comment shot up to the top of the reader recommendations list . Don ’ t ask me why ! You may see it here . Elizabeth Shim of United Press International saw my comment in the Times and contacted me for her story , “ US witness to 1980 South Korea massacre recalls brush with death .” I ’ m not the witness she writes about , but I reported on my stay in South Ko- rea and my Covid - 19 Survival Box . In preparation for my interview with UPI , I read all the letters I sent home from S . Korea over 40 years ago . They reminded me of what an important and pivotal time my Peace Corps experience was in my life . I know I took much more away from S . Korea than I gave . Speaking of giving , I ’ ve given away more than half of the face masks you sent me , each one with the story of S . Korea ’ s love and generosity towards its Peace Corps Volunteers . You are getting a lot of good press in the US these days ! Thank you again , “I know I took much more away from S. Korea than I gave” Leslie Moore , K - 43 Leslie Smith Moore Belfast, Maine
