Section 2. Happiness & Hope Mai lbox of Peace 058 059 Korea Foundation & US Peace Corps KF COVID-19 Survival Box Gratitude Letter Col lection The images on the bookmarks are from my pottery or paintings and reflect Korea ' s unique culture . I attach a photo of some sample bookmarks with some names already on them . Michael John Devine & Maija Rhee Devine Washington DC The President Lincoln ' s image is the only one reflecting American history , but it shows my watercolor that was a New Salem , Illinois ( Lincoln ' s hometown during youth ) art contest in 1998 . A couple of the bookmark images may need some explanatory notes . For example , the bookmark with maps tells the story of Dokkdo Island , being dis- puted by Japan as theirs . The map at far left shows the map used by the U . N . at the end of WWII , that shows Dokkdo as part of Korea . The 16th Century map in the middle was- created by Japan before it invaded Korea in 1592 ( Imjin Invasion ), which also shows the island as Korean . So , I put the map design on my ginger jar pot- tery . The one with Silla crown can use some notation , too . Silla crowns show dan- gling " tear - shaped " jade ornaments . I tried to shape clay into similar " tear - shaped " ornaments and used them on a pendant . Michael and I were both scheduled to visit Seoul June through July of this year because Michael was scheduled to give a talk at Korean University on 7 / 25 / 2020 at the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War . I was scheduled to give two talks at Yonsei University on the topic of " Com- fort Women ." This would have been my third year of giving the lecture there to classes of international students ( CIEE ). But of course , because of COVID , the talks have been postponed to 2021 and we cancelled this year ' s trip . We are praying that our trip to Korea in 2021 will be a " go " and we will be able to give our talks as will be re - scheduled . Sincerely ,
