As we did in any other year , we were planning to invite the US Peace Corps members and their families to Korea during the second half of 2020 , and we were discussing what would be the best time with Mr . James Mayer , Vice President of Friends of Korea . However , the COVID - 19 situation continued to worsen , not only in Korea but also in the United States , where news reports told of tens of thousands of confirmed cases each day . Before long , in - and outbound flights were put on hold , and it became obvious that it would be impossible to safely carry out the US Peace Corps invitation project during that year . With the number of infections and deaths rising day by day , KF staff consid- ered what the Foundation could do for the Peace Corps members . The very people who had once dedicated their young lives to help people in a faraway , poor country called Korea are now senior citizens . We wanted to provide them with a message of hope and gratitude , even if we could not meet them in person . And so was born the idea of a “ KF COVID - 19 Survival Box .” In truth , the situation in Korea was not that bright either . The competition to buy the KF ( Korean Filter ) mask was fierce with people waiting in line for hours , and sending KF masks overseas was also forbidden . You could only occasionally send small number of masks to families living overseas . So , after asking various institutions to find ways to send masks overseas , they replied that sending masks to foreigners would be difficult when there is a lack of supply for citizens . We sent a “ KF mask overseas delivery approval request ” to the MFDS and waited around a month while providing explanations of the need and purpose of the project before finally receiving permission to send around 50 , 000 KF masks to US Peace Corps members . We sincerely think this was possible because of all the effort US Peace Corps members put into Korea in the past . Such details developed our diplomacy a step further.” note*** “ Repaying mind... The government that repays the gratitude of those who helped Korea build current life and prosperity... This is what makes Koreans sincere. The government seems to be aware of the minds of the people” Paul*** “I was touched by the COVID-19 Survival Boxes that were sent to the 6.25 war veterans or to overseas adopted Koreans last time, and I guess they sent COVID-19 Survival Boxes to the Peace Corps members as well. The proudest thing is to repay the favor you received during hard times. The Korean government did a good job here.”
